At its heart
Football

Small beginnings. Big dreams.

When Tsubasa arrives at Nankatsu Elementary School, football helps him find his place. He makes friends with Ryo Ishizaki and Taro Misaki, and meets opponents who push him to become a better player. The story follows their progress through fierce competition across Japan. [2]

Football, with the imagination turned up.

The appeal is as much about friendship and determination as it is about the score. Distinctive characters and spectacular techniques give the matches their larger-than-life energy. The manga also became an anime, carrying that love of the game to audiences around the world. [2]

The anime across generations

The first TV adaptation arrived in 1983, two years after the manga began. More adaptations followed in 1994 and 2001. The matches brought the manga’s exaggerated techniques and drawn-out duels to television. [3]

The 2018 anime starts with Tsubasa’s arrival at Nankatsu and his pursuit of a national title. It is a natural entry point if you want to meet the characters from the beginning. The 2023 Junior Youth Arc moves the story to an international tournament in Paris. Former rivals now share a shirt as Japan faces players such as Germany’s Karl-Heinz Schneider and Argentina’s Juan Diaz. [4] [5]

A story that reached real pitches.

The manga began in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1981. Its influence went beyond entertainment: the Japan Football Association credits it with inspiring future professional players and helping football grow in Japan. Takahashi was inducted into the Japan Football Hall of Fame in 2023. [3]

Nankatsu beyond the manga

Nankatsu is also the name of a football club in Katsushika, Tokyo. Takahashi became its owner in 2019, bringing a name familiar to readers into the world of club football. [3]

Our little corner of that history.

In 2008, a friend made a Captain Tsubasa Flash game for Oyuncha. Years later, we brought its original artwork and sounds into a browser again with HTML5. This is our small tribute to the game we kept.
